EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
