A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
